KENTUCKY COAL
Around April 13, 1750 Dr. Thomas Walker was the first recorded person to discover and use coal in Kentucky. In 1820 the first commercial mine, known as the "McLean drift bank" opened in Kentucky, near the Green River and Paradise in Muhlenberg County; and we have been mining coal ever since.Coal has been used in Kentucky for over 250 years and probably longer if you count the native American Indians.
In a recent study Kentucky produced 125.96 million tons of coal last year compared to the record production of 179.4 million tons set in 1990. Kentucky has been one of the top three coal producing states in the United States for the last 50 years. Kentucky has two distinct coal fields, one in Western Kentucky and one in Eastern Kentucky. Kentucky’s 87.1 billion tons of coal resources remaining represent 83% of the original resource. There are 22 major coal-burning electric generating plants in Kentucky, and almost all of Kentucky’s electricity is generated from coal. Kentucky distributed a total of 121,781,745 tons of coal last year. 80% of Kentucky coal is shipped out of state. 20% of Kentucky coal remains in state. Kentucky coal was shipped to electric power plants in 25 states last year. The Eastern Kentucky coal field shipped about 83 million tons of coal to electric power plants located in 25 states last year. The Western Kentucky coal field sold about 26 million tons of coal to electric power plants in 9 states last year. These electric power plants purchased 109 million tons of Kentucky coal all of last year.
SHIPPING COAL
RAILCAR
Kentucky has over 2,621 miles of railroad lines. 83 million tons
of Kentucky coal were transported over these lines last year. There are
two Class 1 railroads, one regional railroad, and two short line
railroads that operate totally in Kentucky or originate coal in
Kentucky. These railroads, along with privately owned cars for lease,
have over 71,399 hopper cars dedicated to the transport of coal.
Kentucky has approximately 97 coal rail loading facilities.
BARGE
Kentucky has more than 1,000 miles of navigable rivers
over which approximately 21 million tons of Kentucky coal were shipped
last year. Statewide, 45 coal river terminals on the Ohio River and its
tributaries serve Kentucky coal shippers. Of these, 18 coal river
terminals have rail access, 40 have truck access, 17 have barge
off-loading access, and 5 have conveyor access. Automated blending is
found in 27 of the coal river terminals with 29 having automatic
sampling, 16 having some coal crushing equipment, and 7 having stoker
preparation equipment.
TRUCK
Approximately 3,740 miles of state-maintained highways are used for
transporting coal by truck in Kentucky. Truck shipments are very
important mode of coal transportation in Kentucky. Last year,
approximately 1.83 billion ton-miles of coal transportation by truck
were reported in at least one leg of the many different types of
multimodal coal transportation market routes.
